Paul’s 2021 NBA Mock Draft

The combine is over, the withdrawal deadline is up, and now it’s time for the 2021 NBA Draft to kick off on the night of July 29. With a pool full of shooting depth, and some explosive big men, many scouts are hyping up 2021 to be one of the best drafts we’ve seen in a few years. Many believe the top 4 to be heavily loaded with Cunningham, Green, Mobley, and Suggs, and for a fall off to come soon after that. But that doesn’t take away from the rest of the talent in the pool, that contains a lot of NBA potential. At the withdrawal deadline, we saw some notable names decide to head back to college, including: Johnny Juzang (UCLA), Max Abmas (Oral Roberts), Terrence Shannon Jr. (Texas Tech), Marcus Bagley (Arizona St.), Ochai Agbaji (Kansas), Kofi Cockburn (Illinois), among several others. So here it is my 2021 NBA Mock Draft, jam packed with write-ups and reasonings on each of the first-round picks, and a roster chart for second-round picks of who the selecting team has under contract this upcoming season and how the pick may fit.

*This mock draft is completely my own opinion and is not influenced by any other analysts mock drafts. Players rankings are based on deep research of NBA scouts’ impressions on players through the combine and my own thoughts through watching tape and performances in college, as well as team needs.

Version 3.0: UPDATED: Thursday July 29 @ 9:47 a.m.

1st Round

1st pick

Cade Cunningham
PG | 6’8 | 220 lbs
Oklahoma State (Freshman)
20.1 pts, 6.2 reb, 3.5 ast, 1.6 stl

The number one prospect in the entire class, Cunningham can score, pass, rebound, lockdown on the defense end, and so much more. This is the easiest selection as the rebuilding Pistons could have their franchise cornerstone for years to come.

2nd pick

Jalen Green
SG | 6’6 | 178 lbs | Age: 19
NBA G-League Ignite
17.9 pts, 4.1 reb, 2.8 ast, 1.5 stl

The Rockets can use any type of scoring they can find after the departure of James Harden, and Jalen Green might be that piece that can replace their former star. He’s got the potential to be an elite level shot creator and All-Defensive Team type talent. A Jalen Green-Kevin Porter Jr. 1-2 punch on the offensive end could become one of the league’s most lethal duos in 3-5 years.

3rd pick

Evan Mobley
C | 7’0 | 210 lbs
USC (Freshman)
16.4 pts, 8.7 reb, 2.9 blk, 2.4 ast

By far the best big man in the draft, Mobley is a menace in the paint, with amazing footwork, great size and rebounding skills, and elite potential on defense. With Darius Garland and Collin Sexton clogging up the backcourt in Cleveland, Jalen Suggs wouldn’t make much sense, as the Cavs may elect to try to create a frontcourt led by Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley.

4th pick

Jalen Suggs
PG/SG | 6’4 | 205 lbs
Gonzaga (Freshman)
14.4 pts, 5.3 reb, 4.5 ast, 1.9 stl, 33.7% 3P

With the nearly inevitable departure of franchise cornerstone Kyle Lowry this offseason, it’s the perfect time for the Raptors to go young in their backcourt. If Suggs is still on the board at 4, Toronto would gladly take him, as Jalen rounds out a top 4 that is reportedly miles ahead of the rest of the draft.

5th pick

Scottie Barnes
SF | 6’8 | 225 lbs
Florida State (Freshman)
10.3 pts, 4.1 ast, 4 reb, 1.5 stl, 50.3% FG

The Magic got a little unlucky falling to #5, but they might have put themselves in position for a huge steal. Barnes is a 6’8 wing, with perennial All-Defensive skills, a high basketball IQ, an amazing teammate, and great playmaking ability. Basically everything you dream of in a 19-year-old prospect, who can fit very well alongside Jonathan Isaac and Wendell Carter in that frontcourt.

6th pick

James Bouknight
SG | 6’5 | 190 lbs
Connecticut (Sophomore)
18.7 pts, 5.7 reb, 1.8 ast, 1.1 stl

Previously: Jonathan Kuminga

As the draft inches closer and closer, the Thunder seem to be quite high on Bouknight to give them a scoring guard to backup Dort. After breaking out in the Combine, he definitely improved his stock big time and is seen now as one of the best pure scorers in the entire draft.

7th pick

Jonathan Kuminga
SF/PF | 6’6 | 210 lbs | Age: 18
NBA G-League Ignite
15.8 pts, 7.2 reb, 2.7 ast, 1 stl

Previously: Davion Mitchell

Previously I had Davion Mitchell here, who I think is a great fit off the bench for the Warriors, but if the opportunity arises for Kuminga to fall to them at 7, I don’t think they will pass it up. Perceived as a top 5 pick for the longest time, Jonathan has fallen a bit with some questions around his size and shot making. Still, look out for a possible trade of the 7th pick as the Warriors are actively shopping.

8th pick

Moses Moody
SG | 6’6 | 211 lbs
Arkansas (Freshman)
16.8 pts, 5.8 reb, 1.6 ast, 1 stl, 35.8% 3P

Previously: Keon Johnson

The Magic have three expiring contracts after 2022 in Dwayne Bacon, Gary Harris, and Michael Carter-Williams and could look to add young backcourt depth. Originally I had Keon Johnson here but the shooting prowess of Moses Moody may be an intriguing get for Orlando at 8.

9th pick

Jalen Johnson
PF | 6’9 | 210 lbs
Duke (Freshman)
13 GP, 11.2 pts, 6.1 reb, 2.2 ast, 1.2 stl

Well we know the Kings won’t be taking another guard with De’Aaron Fox, Buddy Hield, and Tyrese Haliburton clogging up the backcourt, and a big man could be a big need for Sac Town. With Harrison Barnes still under contract and the uncertainty around Marvin Bagley’s future with the Kings, Johnson could be another talented Duke big man that the Kings take a chance on.

10th pick

Corey Kispert
SF | 6’7 | 224 lbs
Gonzaga (Senior)
18.6 pts, 5 reb, 1.8 ast, 0.9 stl, 44% 3P

Previously: Moses Moody, James Bouknight

The Grizzlies moved up in the draft a few days ago, as they packaged Jonas Valanciunas and their 17th and 51st pick to the Pelicans in exchange for Steven Adams, Eric Bledsoe, the 10th pick, and 40th pick. This move easily bolsters Memphis’ lineup and gives them great veteran depth with Bledsoe and Adams. At #10 they’ll probably look to add a shooter and even though they’re high on Moses Moody, if he’s gone Corey Kispert could be a perfect option to add to that young core.

11th pick

Franz Wagner
PF | 6’9 | 220 lbs
Michigan (Sophomore)
12.5 pts, 6.5 reb, 3 ast, 1.3 stl, 1 blk

Previously: Moses Moody

After stock piling big men in last year’s draft after taking LaMelo Ball with the third pick, the Hornets may look to add even more if the case arises for Wagner to fall to 11. With great size and playmaking skills, Franz can become a solid piece to add to the frontcourt depth of P.J. Washington, Gordon Hayward, and Miles Bridges.

12th pick

Alperen Sengün
C | 6’10 | 240 lbs | Age: 19
Besiktas Sompo Japan (Turkey – BSL)
37 GP, 19 pts, 8.7 reb, 2.7 ast, 1.6 blk

Previously: Usman Garuba

With a plethora of young guards, the Spurs could use some frontcourt depth and will most likely use their 12th pick on just that. The team lacked a legitimate 4 all year long, with Keldon Johnson stretching to the position in ’20-’21. For the same reason I had Usman Garuba here, I put in Sengun who has now eclipsed him as the top International big man prospect.

13th pick

Josh Giddey
PG | 6’7 | 192 lbs | Age: 18
Adelaide 36ers (Australia – NBL)
28 GP, 10.8 pts, 7.4 ast, 7.4 reb, 1.1 stl

Giddey has flown up draft boards in the past couple of months, and to anyone who has seen his tapes you’ll know exactly why. He’s elusive, athletic, has great size, and the potential to become a quality NBA point guard. With two years left of Malcolm Brogdon and an expiring T.J. McConnell contract, the Pacers are going to look for a guard and can try to develop Giddey as their starter long-term.

14th pick

Davion Mitchell
PG/SG | 6’1 | 202 lbs
Baylor (Junior)
14 pts, 5.5 ast, 2.7 reb, 1.9 stl, 44.7% 3P

Previously: Franz Wagner

Who knows about the uncertainty around Steph Curry’s future, and with Klay Thompson returning, a revenge tour in 2022 could be on for the Warriors. Backcourt depth is a big thing they lack, and Davion Mitchell is one of the surest things in this year’s draft. Davion can provide lockdown defense that would compliment Klay and Steph nicely in the second unit.

15th pick

Isaiah Jackson
C | 6’10 | 206 lbs
Kentucky (Freshman)
8.4 pts, 6.6 reb, 2.6 blk, 0.8 stl, 54% FG

When you have a backcourt of Russell Westbrook and Bradley Beal it wouldn’t seem like your team should have many issues, but the frontcourt held back the Wizards big time this past year. When Thomas Bryant went down for the season, they had no legitimate centers to fill the void. Jackson can thrive big time backing up Bryant and developing his offensive game to potentially becoming the successor at the 5.

16th pick

Kai Jones
C | 7’0 | 221 lbs
Texas (Sophomore)
8.8 pts, 4.8 reb, 0.9 blk, 0.8 stl, 58% FG

Previously: Corey Kispert

If Kispert is gone at 16, which seems all but likely, the Thunder should opt to look at one of the young big men that will be available at the position. If Isaiah Jackson is gone, Kai Jones could be a perfect fit to try to mold into the team’s long term big man.

17th pick

Keon Johnson
SG | 6’5 | 185 lbs
Tennessee (Freshman)
11.3 pts, 3.5 reb, 2.5 ast, 1.1 stl

Previously: Kai Jones

After another disappointing year and another failed Head Coach, the Pelicans enter the draft needing shooters badly. The team shot 34.8% from downtown which was good for 25th best in the entire league in ’20-’21 and will look to add an athletic scorer to the backcourt along a core of Ingram, Williamson, and Valanciunas. Before he shattered the NBA Combine record with a 48-inch vertical, Keon had been moving up draft boards due to his insane athleticism, and great two-way potential.

18th pick

Jared Butler
SG | 6’4 | 193 lbs
Baylor (Junior)
16.7 pts, 4.8 ast, 3.3 reb, 2 stl, 41.6% 3P

As we’ve seen with the Thunder’s other two first round picks, they’re going to look to try to bolster their roster with the best talent they see fit. Kuminga can become a key frontcourt piece, Kispert can become the team’s leading three-point sniper, and Jared Butler could be a key backcourt piece in the second unit. Butler is poised to be a great NBA talent with his winning mentality and great defensive mindset. Not to mention Butler and Kispert have become close friends since they competed in the National Championship.

19th pick

Ayo Dosunmu
PG | 6’5 | 194 lbs
Illinois (Junior)
20.1 pts, 6.3 reb, 5.3 ast, 1.1 stl, 39% 3P

The Knicks need a playmaking Point Guard that can take over a game on the offensive end, and that’s exactly what Dosunmu can do. One of the clutchest players in all of college basketball this past year, Ayo has great size and is an exceptional scorer from anywhere on the floor. I’ve been saying it for a while but he is exactly the type of player that can develop into the Knicks young leader with Immanuel Quickley and R.J. Barrett in the backcourt.

20th pick

Chris Duarte
PG/SG | 6’6 | 190 lbs
Oregon (Senior)
17.1 pts, 4.6 reb, 2.7 ast, 1.9 stl, 42.4% 3P

Coming off of their improbable run to the Eastern Conference Finals, the Hawks have a stock pile of young talent and will look to add to it with the 20th pick. Duarte is an explosive offensive minded combo guard that has great potential on the defensive end. With a surplus of young forwards, a backup for Trae Young could be the way to go for Atlanta.

21st pick

Usman Garuba
PF | 6’8 | 220 lbs | Age: 19
Real Madrid (Spain – ACB/EuroLeague)
86 GP, 4.7 pts, 4.6 reb, 0.8 ast, 0.7 stl

Previously: Cameron Thomas

With the expiring contracts of Nerlens Noel and Taj Gibson, and the injury history of Mitchell Robinson, the Knicks should definitely look for a young big man with their second first-round pick. Garuba has a ton of raw potential and could be a good bench piece to groom into a rotational piece down the line.

22nd pick

Cameron Thomas
SG | 6’4 | 210 lbs
LSU (Freshman)
23 pts, 3.4 reb, 1.4 ast, 0.9 stl, 32.5% 3P

Previously: Jaden Springer

The 2020 champs had a quick exit in the 2021 playoffs after injury plagued seasons from LeBron and AD, and very little help from the supporting cast. The Lakers need three-point shooting badly and although they’ll be much more aggressive on the free agent and trade market rather than the draft, they should look to fill the void there at 22. Thomas can light it up from three and has great athleticism to become a combo guard.

23rd pick

Tre Mann
PG | 6’4 | 178 lbs
Florida (Sophomore)
16 pts, 5.6 reb, 3.5 ast, 1.4 stl, 40.2% 3P

The Rockets need a lot and the potential of adding Jalen Green could be lethal, but why not add another backcourt mate while they’re at it. Mann is a lethal scoring combo guard with great size and athleticism that scouts think can become a valuable bench piece in the league. The first of back-to-back late first rounders for Houston, Tre could be an intriguing prospect that will fit well in their rebuild.

24th pick

Trey Murphy III
SF | 6’9 | 206 lbs
Virginia (Junior)
11.3 pts, 3.4 reb, 1.2 ast, 0.8 stl, 43.3% 3P

Previously: Alperen Sengun

With the second of their back-to-back picks and their third first rounder, the Rockets can look to attack their frontcourt issues and Trey Murphy could be a perfect fit. With a ton of potential on both the offensive and defensive ends, Murphy can flourish alongside a core of KPJ and Jalen Green.

25th pick

Sandro Mamukelashvili
PF/C | 6’11 | 240 lbs
Seton Hall (Senior)
17.5 pts, 7.6 reb, 3.2 ast, 1.1 stl

After making it to their first ever Western Conference Finals in team history, the Clippers still look at this season as a failure. There’s a lot of “if’s” around the team this offseason including the uncertainty of Kawhi and several other free agents. One thing the team does lack is impactful young talent that can come in and give them quality minutes off the bat. I know Mamu is much lower on most draft boards, but his work ethic and athleticism wow’d scouts at the combine. He can be a perfect bench piece to add to a loaded roster like the Clippers.

26th pick

Quentin Grimes
SG | 6’5 | 210 lbs
Houston (Junior)
17.8 pts, 5.7 reb, 2 ast, 1.4 stl, 40.3% 3P

As a highly regarded prospect out of High School, it took Grimes two schools and three years to reach his potential en route to the Final Four. A great combine proved to scouts he can be a reliable scorer in the NBA with great size and defensive skills. The Nuggets struggled all year trying to find a secondary scorer after Jamal Murray went down and Grimes could be a good fit for depth.

27th pick

Jaden Springer
SG | 6’4 | 202 lbs
Tennessee (Freshman)
12.5 pts, 3.5 reb, 2.9 ast, 1.2 stl, 43.5% 3P

Previously: Trey Murphy III

The Nets don’t have very many flaws, obviously, and if it wasn’t for the injuries it was presumed around the league they would have been the 2021 champs. One thing Brooklyn does lack though is depth, especially in the backcourt. Springer is an athletic guard who can be an impactful shooter and defensive option off the bench for a championship caliber team.

28th pick

Sharife Cooper
PG | 6’5 | 180 lbs
Auburn (Freshman)
12 GP, 20.2 pts, 8.1 ast, 4.3 reb, 1 stl

After re-classifying mid-season, Cooper stepped into the Auburn lineup and dominated immediately as the key playmaker. With a ton of uncertainty around the Sixers backcourt, a prospect like Cooper can be a great second unit piece to help lead the scoring with Tyrese Maxey.

29th pick

Josh Christopher
SG | 6’5 | 215 lbs
Arizona State (Freshman)
14.3 pts, 4.7 reb, 1.5 stl, 1.4 ast

An athletic two-way shooing guard, Christopher was one of the top prospects in this years class and showed a lot of promise in the combine. It might take some time to develop but he can definitely become a serviceable bench piece for a competitive team. With the Suns being high hopefuls for their first NBA Championship, why not keep Christopher in The Valley as a developmental bench piece.

30th pick

Nah’Shon Hyland
SG | 6’4 | 169 lbs
VCU (Sophomore)
19.5 pts, 4.7 reb, 2.1 ast, 1.9 stl, 37.1% 3P

After a dominant year for the Rams, Hyland was one of the big winners of the Combine, showing scouts his size and lethal scoring talent can translate into the NBA. And after another disappointing playoff exit while finishing with the best record in the league, the Jazz will need to answer some questions about their future. Bench scoring can never hurt. As Jordan Clarkson and Joe Ingles lead the second unit, Hyland will get plenty of time to develop over the years, as Quin Snyder is known to develop his rookies slowly.

2nd Round

31st pick

Charles Bassey
C | 6’10 | 230 lbs
