MLB Free Agent Predictions 2022

Another wild MLB season is in the books and this year’s offseason looks to be crazier in more ways than one. Not only is this one of the most stacked free agent classes we’ve ever seen, the drama also centers around the CBA that sets to expire on December 1. Come that day, the baseball world anticipates a league-wide lockout that hopefully can be resolved sooner rather than later. What a lockout means is free agency and all offseason moves will most likely come to a halt until something is agreed upon. That means we may see a free agent class drag out longer than anticipated, possibly resulting in some top players on the market not signing until January or February. Regardless, both the starting pitching and infielders on the market are absolutely loaded, with a potential for 5 or 6 guys to sign a 7+ year contract. Stars in the likes of Corey Seager, Carlos Correa, Javier Baez, Marcus Stroman, Trevor Story, and more will be looking to find homes for the foreseeable future, and future HOF’s like Clayton Kershaw, Max Scherzer, and Justin Verlander will look to possibly find one last big contract. With all of that being said, check out my 2022 MLB Free Agent predictions, filled with write-ups and picks of where I see each of the top guys on the market landing. Hope you enjoy!

TOP TIER:

Yan Gomes
Catcher/ Age: 34/ Career: TOR ’12, CLE ’13-’18, WAS ’19-’21, OAK ’21
Achievements: WS Champion (’19), 1x All-Star, 1x Silver Slugger
From: Oakland/ To: Colorado/ Contract: 2 years, $6m (1 year, $3m Team Option in 2023)
Other Potential Options: San Diego, Oakland, San Francisco, Tampa Bay
2021 Stats: .252 AVG, 14 HR, 52 RBI, .301 OBP

There are very, very, very few catcher options in this year’s free agent class, really the only notables being Yan Gomes, Roberto Perez, and Martin Maldonado. So any team that is looking to upgrade at catcher with a veteran will definitely be looking Gomes’ way as he had another productive year splitting time in Washington and Oakland. The Padres can use a backup for Austin Nola, the A’s could slot him back in well, the Giants could opt for two veteran catchers with him and Casali, but the ones who I think come away with him is the Rockies. They can afford to give him more than most and their vacancy at catcher has begun to become a bit alarming.

Freddie Freeman
First Base/ Age: 32/ Career: ATL ’10-’21
Achievements: WS Champion (’21), NL MVP (’20), 5x All-Star, 1x Gold Glove, 3x Silver Slugger
From: Atlanta/ To: Atlanta/ Contract: 6 years, $174m (1 year, $31m Player Option for 2027)
Other Potential Options: NO ONE
2021 Stats: .300 AVG, 31 HR, 83 RBI, .393 OBP

Between the new CBA, all of the big name free agents, and so much more, there will be very few definite’s this offseason. But one thing I would bank on as being as close to one as there is would be Freeman returning to Atlanta. He is Mr. Brave, and with an MVP, 5 all-star appearances and now a World Series title under his belt, Freddie is well on his way to making a bid for Cooperstown. I expect him to get re-upped on a several year deal, worth around $30m annually, securing him to be a Brave into his late 30’s.

Brandon Belt (WRITTEN BEFORE ACCEPTING THE QUALIFYING OFFER)
First Base/ Age: 33/ Career: SF ’11-’21
Achievements: 2x WS Champion (’12, ’14), 1x All-Star
From: San Francisco/ To: San Francisco/ Contract: 2 years, $32m
Other Potential Options: Seattle, Boston, Houston
2021 Stats: .274 AVG, 29 HR, 59 RBI, .378 OBP

Belt has been a key staple of the Giants over the past decade and helped ignite the 107-win squad with his clear cut best power year of his career. After signing his big 5-year extension in 2017, he’s headed back to free agency entering his age-34 season. It’s extremely tough to imagine Belt in any other uniform besides the Giants, especially after the retirement of Buster Posey. Belt and Brandon Crawford will be looked at as the captains of a team hungry to avenge their first round exit. Other competitive teams that could be in the market for a 1B are the Mariners, Red Sox, and Astros.

Anthony Rizzo
First Base/ Age: 32/ Career: SD ’11, CHC ’12-’21, NYY ’21
Achievements: WS Champion (’16), 3x All-Star, 4x Gold Glove, 1x Silver Slugger
From: NY Yankees/ To: Seattle/ Contract: 4 years, $65m
Other Potential Options: Texas, NY Yankees, CHI Cubs
2021 Stats: .248 AVG, 22 HR, 61 RBI, .344 OBP

By far one of the more unpredictable guys on the market this offseason, Rizzo will be heading into his age-33 season fresh off of another solid year. Sure the numbers aren’t prime Rizzo but he’s still an extremely serviceable 1B who will be on the must have list for anyone in that market. He has already been vocal about wanting to stay with the Yankees but with Luke Voit and the long-term deal of D.J. LeMahieu it may be too difficult to accomplish. The Mariners are a team that will be looking to take that next step after almost getting their first postseason berth in 20 years. They have a young outfield core on the horizon with a big opening at 1B and a veteran like Rizzo could be the perfect captain the team needs.

Chris Taylor
Super Utility/ Age: 31/ Career: SEA ’14-’16, LAD ’16-’21
Achievements: WS Champion (’20), NLCS MVP (’17), 1x All-Star
From: LA Dodgers/ To: NY Yankees/ Contract: 3 years, $32m (1 year, $12m Team Option for 2024)
Other Potential Options: LA Dodgers, Philadelphia, Toronto, Houston
2021 Stats: .254 AVG, 20 HR, 73 RBI, 13 SB

Coming off of the greatest year of his career that resulted in an all-star appearance, CT3 expects to cash in this offseason as one of the best utility options on the market. The Dodgers are plagued with a bunch of free agents they have to deal with and they definitely won’t be able to bring everyone back with their already skyrocketed salary cap. I think their focus may be more on arms over bats and Taylor could see more money elsewhere. The Yankees are a perfect option as Taylor can fill in anywhere in the infield and the corner outfield spots. I also don’t believe the Yanks will be huge spenders this offseason, and with Taylor’s 9 career postseason bombs, he could be a good piece as a fifth infielder.

Carlos Correa
Short Stop/ Age: 27/ Career: HOU ’15-’21
Achievements: WS Champion (’17), AL Rookie of the Year (’15), 2x All-Star, 1x Gold Glove
From: Houston/ To: Detroit/ Contract: 9 years, $283.5m (6 year, 192m Player Option in 2025)
Other Potential Options: Houston, NY Yankees, St. Louis, NY Mets, Toronto
2021 Stats: .279 AVG, 26 HR, 92 RBI, .366 OBP

The grand prize of this entire offseason, Carlos Correa enters free agency for the first time in his career looking to cash in the way Machado and Lindor did. Any team with the money and an opening at SS will have Correa number one on their list, and if he’s willing to play 2B or 3B he can add a lot more teams. The sexy option will easily be the big markets with the Yankees and Cardinals. Both though, in my opinion, have too many outside factors preventing them from adding a close to 10-year deal. In the end, I think it’s a rebuilding squad that will meet his desires and be able to afford a blockbuster contract that he’ll want. The Tigers are slowly but surely coming along, and with 1B/3B Spencer Torkelson on the horizon and franchise cornerstone Miguel Cabrera on his way out, they could look to add one of the league’s best. If Correa wants that 9-10 year deal around $250m-$300m he may need to find it with a rebuilding squad like the Tigers.

Javier Báez
Short Stop/Second Base/ Age: 29/ Career: CHC ’14-’21, NYM ’21
Achievements: WS Champion (’16), NLCS MVP (’16), 2x All-Star, 1x Gold Glove, 1x Silver Slugger, NL RBI Leader (’18)
From: NY Mets/ To: NY Mets/ Contract: 8 years, $212m (3 year, $84m Player Option in 2027)
Other Potential Options: Detroit, Texas, Seattle, LA Angels, Houston
2021 Stats: .265 AVG, 31 HR, 87 RBI, 18 SB

One of the flashiest and most talented players in all of baseball, Baez spent the better part of seven years with the Cubs before their dump of players at the deadline led him to join his friend Francisco Lindor in Queens. Although the Mets’ second half was a nightmare, Javy was one of the few bright spots and upped his value even higher with another great year. A short stop by trait, he played second and created one of the scariest double play duos in baseball alongside Lindor. Baez and the Mets just seems like a perfect match, as not only does he provide a gold glove partner to Lindor but also can stabilize the Mets lineup with another power bat. I don’t see the Mets letting him walk, and I think the plan will be to match up Lindor and Baez up the middle at Citi Field for the next decade.

Marcus Semien
Short Stop/Second Base/ Age: 31/ Career: CWS ’13-’14, OAK ’15-’20, TOR ’21
Achievements: 1x All-Star, 1x Silver Slugger, 1x Gold Glove
From: Toronto/ To: Houston/ Contract: 5 years, $137.5m
Other Potential Options: Toronto, CHI White Sox, Cincinnati
2021 Stats: .265 AVG, 45 HR, 102 RBI, 15 SB

If there was one guy that benefited the most from a prove yourself year it was Marcus Semien. After settling for a one-year deal in Toronto for the 2021 season, Marcus had a career year in literally every category and followed up by hiring Scott Boras to get him that lucrative contract he’s been seeking. He’ll be a cheaper alternative to some of the other stars with the ability to play both 2B and SS, although he’ll most likely look for spots as a SS. The Blue Jays could try hard to retain him, but with Bo Bichette manning short he would have to agree to be their 2B. The White Sox could also look at him for a 2B role but one team that makes the most sense is the reigning AL Champion Astros. It was reported that they offered Correa a 5-year deal around $25m annually last offseason, so clearly that is a price range they are willing to pay. If they lose their star short stop they will have a humungous hole to fill where Semien could be just the guy to fit in their price range. I really like a potential Semien and Astros marriage.

Corey Seager
Short Stop/ Age: 27/ Career: LAD ’15-’21
Achievements: WS Champion (’20), WS MVP (’20), NLCS MVP (’20), NL Rookie of the Year (’16), 2x All-Star, 2x Silver Slugger
From: LA Dodgers/ To: Texas/ Contract: 7 years, $203m (3 year, $90m Player Option in 2026)
Other Potential Options: NY Yankees, Detroit, LA Dodgers, CHI Cubs
2021 Stats: .306 AVG, 16 HR, 57 RBI, .394 OBP

Another star middle infielder that is set to hit the free agent market is 2020 NLCS and World Series MVP Corey Seager. For the first time in his career, Seager will be on the open market looking to cash in in the range of the top short stops in the game. His numbers and accolades speak for themselves as he’s a career .297 hitter in seven big-league seasons with 104 bombs out in LA. As I’ve stated before, the Dodgers are stricken with a lot of free agents this offseason and after trading for Trea Turner at last year’s deadline, it seems as though the team is preparing to lose their star lefty bat. All the familiar teams that are in need of a cornerstone star will be on the lookout for Seager, as the Yankees have became early favorites to land him. Again, I don’t see the Yankees giving out a 7+ year-deal this offseason, especially with Aaron Judge’s impending free agency on the horizon. Similar to Correa, I think a rebuilding squad is most likely to meet Seager’s demands and the Rangers may be just the fit. After trading away star Joey Gallo, the team is in need of a piece to build around, and a hefty 7-year deal could be just in their wheelhouse for a bat like Seager.

Trevor Story
Short Stop/ Age: 29/ Career: COL ’16-’21
Achievements: 2x All-Star, 2x Silver Slugger, NL Stolen Base Leader (’20)
From: Colorado/ To: CHI White Sox/ Contract: 1 year, $22m
Other Potential Options: Texas, Colorado, Philadelphia, NY Yankees, Seattle
2021 Stats: .251 AVG, 24 HR, 75 RBI, 20 SB

Okay hear me out, Trevor Story did have a good year, unlike what most people think I believe he was great. Having said that, this one-year deal is not in direct correlation with his performance but more of the hefty free agent class. There’s only so many huge deals to go around, and I think similar to the last few years, we’re going to see one of these stars settle for a 1-year deal for a load of money to test free agency again next year. Story wants to compete, and I think with him most likely leaving Colorado joining a winner will be his highest priority. Tim Anderson is already manning short and Yoan Moncada is at third, but with the team letting Cesar Hernandez walk there’s an opening at second base. I would not be shocked one bit if Story played a new position for 2022 to try to compete and get that 5+ year deal next offseason heading into his age-30 season. The White Sox could be loaded if they pull this off.

Kris Bryant
Third Base/Outfield/ Age: 30/ Career: CHC ’15-’21, SF ’21
Achievements: WS Champion (’16), NL MVP (’16), NL Rookie of the Year (’15), 4x All-Star
From: San Francisco/ To: San Francisco/ Contract: 6 years, $180m (4 year, $120m Player Option in 2024)
Other Potential Options: NY Mets, Seattle, Toronto, Philadelphia
2021 Stats: .265 AVG, 25 HR, 73 RBI, .353 OBP

For the first time in his career, former NL MVP KB17 will be hitting the free agent market. The versatile righty bat has been one of the big faces across baseball over the past seven years, and provides a ton of star power with his power and high level defense at both third base and in the outfield. There’s going to be a bunch of suitors, including some intriguing choices that aren’t being talked about like the Phillies and Blue Jays. The Mets will be a big suitor as well but will only likely sign him if they don’t retain Baez and/or Conforto. The Mariners too are in the market for a star, but I feel as though Bryant will opt to be on more of a winner. I think the Giants inevitably extend him on a 6 or 7 year deal with a long-term player option somewhere in the middle. With Solano’s contract expiring, Bryant can move back to third for the long haul while getting some time in CF and RF for San Fran.

Eduardo Escobar
Infielder/ Age: 33/ Career: CWS ’11-’12, MIN ’12-’18, ARI ’18-’21, MIL ’21
Achievements: 1x All-Star
From: Milwaukee/ To: Toronto/ Contract: 3 years, $36m
Other Potential Options: Milwaukee, CHI White Sox, Philadelphia
2021 Stats: .253 AVG, 28 HR, 90 RBI, .786 OPS

Now that we’ve gotten through tier 1 of the infield, let’s look at some of the other big time players that aren’t being talked about as much in the market. Escobar is a perennial 100+ RBI guy that seems to get better with age and can easily demand a 3-year deal at age 33. The teams that miss out on the big names could look his way as Eduardo has versatility to play 3B, 2B, and even 1B. If the Blue Jays lose out on Marcus Semien, they will definitely be looking for a 3B or 2B to fill his spot. Escobar could be a perfect fit, as he could be a great complimentary bat in the middle of that lineup and can provide similar power numbers to Semien.

Kyle Seager
Third Base/ Age: 34/ Career: SEA ’11-’21
Achievements: 1x All-Star, 1x Gold Glove
From: Seattle/ To: CHI Cubs/ Contract: 2 years, $28m
Other Potential Options: Texas, Toronto, Milwaukee
2021 Stats: .212 AVG, 35 HR, 101 RBI, .723 OPS

After 11 seasons as the cornerstone piece in Seattle, the Mariners turned down Seager’s team option and he will hit the free agent market looking for a new home this offseason. Kyle has put together a great career for himself compiling 242 homers and a career average of .251 while only playing less than 155 games twice in 11 seasons. A few teams will be on his radar, as I think the Rangers could be a really interesting option especially if his brother Corey signs there. The Cubs will be looking to add some veteran depth to their rebuilding squad and could give him more than anyone else has to offer. But for a guy who has never played a playoff game in 11 big league seasons, I wouldn’t be shocked if a contender was at the top of his list, regardless of the price.

Nick Castellanos
Right Field/ Age: 30/ Career: DET ’13-’19, CHC ’19, CIN ’20-’21
Achievements: 1x All-Star, 1x Silver Slugger, AL Triples Leader (’17)
From: Cincinnati/ To: San Diego/ Contract: 5 years, $125m (2 year, $55m Player Option in 2025)
Other Potential Options: Cincinnati, NY Mets, Detroit, Minnesota, Boston
2021 Stats: .309 AVG, 34 HR, 100 RBI, .939 OPS

After declining the three years left on his Reds’ contract, Castellanos is set to hit free agency after coming off a career year. No doubt one of the league’s most reliable players over the past five-plus years, he put himself on the map by slashing .309/.362/.576 while being named an all-star and silver slugger in 2021. As he won’t turn 30 until the start of Spring Training, Castellanos will definitely demand a 4-6 year deal with upwards towards $20m+ annually. Any team that needs corner outfield help will be looking his way. Some scouts believe that his declining ability to play the outfield may cause him to get more looks as a DH. With Tommy Pham’s contract coming off the books I feel like the Padres seem like a solid suitor that can meet his demands for playing for a contender. Plus with the DH coming to the NL eventually, an NL team may not be out of the picture.

Starling Marte
Center Field/ Age: 33/ Career: PIT ’12-’19, ARI ’20, MIA ’20-’21, OAK ’21
Achievements: 1x All-Star, 2x Gold Glove, MLB SB Leader (’21)
From: Oakland/ To: Philadelphia/ Contract: 4 years, $92m
Other Potential Options: NY Mets, Miami, NY Yankees, Detroit, Houston
2021 Stats: .310 AVG, 12 HR, 55 RBI, 47 SB

Next to Castellanos, Marte is probably the premier outfielder on the market this season as he looks to cash in after a career year in stolen bases. For close to a decade Marte has been one of the league’s best CF’s with an amazing glove, high contact/power hitting, and a speedster on the base path. Several NL East teams will be in on him as the Phillies, Mets, and his old employer the Marlins all have openings in CF and could use a top of the order bat. The Marlins already tried to extend him but low balled him a year ago, and if the Mets re-sign Baez and possibly a big name pitcher they may be less likely to grab Starling. The Phillies seem like a perfect fit, as he can pair up alongside Bryce Harper in an outfield that’s decimated with the losses of Odubel Herrera and Andrew McCutchen.

Kyle Schwarber
Left Field/ Age: 28/ Career: CHC ’15-’20, WAS ’21, BOS ’21
Achievements: WS Champion (’16), 1x All-Star
From: Boston/ To: Boston/ Contract: 3 years, $36m (1 year, $12m Team Option in 2024)
Other Potential Options: Tampa Bay, Detroit
2021 Stats: .266 AVG, 32 HR, 71 RBI, .374 OBP

After being let go by the Cubs last offseason, Schwarber settled on a 1-year deal with the Nats that resulted in his best numbers in the bigs. The former number four pick surged 32 bombs in a mixed season with Washington and Boston helping lead the BoSox to an ALCS appearance. Now set to hit the market again, Schwarber should demand a multi-year deal at only 28. The only problem is his defense, as he’s a lackluster outfielder and may be looked at as a primary DH by an AL team. Even though J.D. Martinez will be headed back, I think he was such a perfect fit with the Red Sox, and can get away with not DH’ing by playing in a very tiny left field at Fenway.

Michael Conforto
Right Field/ Age: 28/ Career: NYM ’15-’21
Achievements: 1x All-Star
From: NY Mets/ To: CHI Cubs/ Contract: 5 years, $112.5m
Other Potential Options: NY Mets, Seattle, Philadelphia, San Diego
2021 Stats: .232 AVG, 14 HR, 55 RBI, .344 OBP

This one hurts to report as a Mets fan but I truly don’t see Conforto heading back to Queens. After turning down the qualifying offer in a not so great walk season, the rumors still circulate that the young lefty bat will demand a contract close to $100m. Now several teams could be in on him, as the Phillies and Padres both will be looking to upgrade outfield. I also wouldn’t count out his hometown team the Mariners, as they look to spend some money, but I can see the Cubs landing him. Chicago is rebuilding but they’re going to look for a young cornerstone piece to try to build around, and with Jason Heyward’s ability to move around, Conforto could be the everyday RF or LF in Wrigley. They sure saw plenty of his potential during the 2015 NLCS…

Adam Duvall
Left Field/ Age: 33/ Career: SF ’14, CIN ’15-’18, ATL ’18-’20/’21, MIA ’21
Achievements: WS Champion (’21), 1x All-Star, 1x Gold Glove, NL RBI Leader (’21)
From: Atlanta/ To: Atlanta/ Contract: 3 years, $27m (1 year, $10m Team Option in 2024)
Other Potential Options: Philadelphia, Houston, Cleveland, San Francisco
2021 Stats: .228 AVG, 38 HR, 113 RBI, .772 OPS

One of the all-around best deadline deals this past season, Duvall led the NL in RBI’s while splitting time in Miami and Atlanta, helping the Braves win the World Series. With his gold glove defense and elite power bat, I think Duvall will finally get that multi-year deal he’s been searching for. And I think it’s going to come from none other than the Braves. Atlanta loves him, and with the uncertainty around Marcell Ozuna and the eventual return of Ronald Acuna, I think Duvall will get a solid 3 year deal to stay as the every day LF for the Braves.

Eddie Rosario
Left Field/ Age: 30/ Career: MIN ’15-’20, CLE ’21, ATL ’21
Achievements: WS Champion (’21), NLCS MVP (’21), AL Triples Leader (’15)
From: Atlanta/ To: Detroit/ Contract: 4 years, $42m (1 year, $12m Team Option in 2025)
Other Potential Options: LA Dodgers, Seattle, Colorado
2021 Stats: .259 AVG, 14 HR, 62 RBI, 11 SB

I’ll tell you what this isn’t something that came out of nowhere, Rosario’s amazing playoff performance may have set him up for a big pay check but he’s been consistent for since getting called up in 2015. After battling injuries and limited play time, Rosario slotted into the every day role and batted .290, .288, and .276 from 2017-2019 for the Twins. He’s also amassed 133 homeruns in his young career and should have several teams after him. The Rockies and Mariners could be looking to spend money and use another bat, and if the Dodgers lose Taylor and/or Seager they’ll probably be shopping for an extra bat. But the Tigers seem like a perfect fit, as they have a ton of money to spend, and with Riley Greene on his way they can look to fill out their outfield with a veteran bat to go with Akil Baddoo.

Nelson Cruz
Designated Hitter/ Age: 41/ Career: MIL ’05, TEX ’06-’13, BAL ’14, SEA ’15-’18, MIN ’19-’21, SEA ’21
Achievements: ALCS MVP (’11), 7x All-Star, 4x Silver Slugger, AL Homerun leader (’14), AL RBI Leader (’17)
From: Tampa Bay/ To: Tampa Bay/ Contract: 1 year, $8m
Other Potential Options: CHI White Sox, Oakland, Texas
2021 Stats: .265 AVG, 32 HR, 86 RBI, .334 OBP

As he does every offseason, the great Nelson Cruz will become a free agent yet again after another elite hitting year from the 41-year-old. It doesn’t seem like Cruz will be hanging them up any time soon, and as a full-time DH his workload isn’t too overpowering for him to consider it. Any AL team that needs a DH will take a flyer on the 7-time all-star, including the White Sox who could become that much more dangerous. If the A’s wanted a veteran they could be in the mix and even his old team the Rangers who may look for a veteran bat. But I don’t see the Rays letting him go, and although the team rarely signs notable free agents, I think he fits so well with that young offense.

Max Scherzer
Starting Pitcher/ Age: 37/ Career: ARI ’08-’09, DET ’10-’14, WAS ’15-’21, LAD ’21
Achievements: WS Champion (’19), 3x Cy Young (’13, ’16, ’17), 8x All-Star, 4x wins leader (’13, ’14, ’16, ’18), 3x NL Strikeout leader (’16-’18)
From: LA Dodgers/ To: LA Dodgers/ Contract: 2 years, $62m
Other Potential Options: NY Yankees, LA Angels, San Francisco, San Diego, St. Louis
2021 Stats: 15-4, 2.46 ERA, 236 Ks, 0.86 WHIP

Onto the pitching side of things, we have five Cy Young winners on the market and Scherzer will be the top dog among them all. Heading into his age-38 season, Max put up another amazing season posting a 2.46 ERA and leading the league in WHIP. Scherzer has already stated he doesn’t care about geography as he just wants to be a part of a winner, contradicting his wishes at the deadline to be in California. Regardless, three Cali teams should be hot on his trail, including the Giants, Angels, and his current squad the Dodgers. The Yankees will also be in the market for more starting pitching, and the Padres and Cardinals can kick the tires as well. But inevitably I don’t see him leaving the Dodgers, I think this is his best fit and probably his best situation to end out his career on a new 2-year deal to try to win his second ring. With Kershaw’s money coming off of the books, I think they may trade their long-time franchise icon for a couple of years of a different future Hall-of-Famer.

Clayton Kershaw
Starting Pitcher/ Age: 33/ Career: LAD ’08-’21
Achievements: WS Champion (’20), 3x NL Cy Young (’11, ’13, ’14), NL MVP (’14), 8x All-Star, 1x Gold Glove, 3x NL Wins leader (’11, ’14, ’17), 5x NL ERA leader (’11-’14, ’17), 3x NL Strikeout leader (’11, ’13, ’15)
From: LA Dodgers/ To: Texas/ Contract: 4 years, $128m
Other Potential Options: NY Yankees, LA Dodgers, LA Angels, Houston, San Francisco
2021 Stats: 10-8, 3.55 ERA, 144 Ks, 1.02 WHIP

The biggest bombshell of this article? Well possibly but Kershaw to the Rangers may not be as far fetched as some might think. Rumors have circulated that the Dodgers are preferring Scherzer over Kershaw, and with their already immense pitching depth, I don’t see them re-signing both. Now if he leaves (although it will be tough to imagine him in a jersey other than the Dodgers) almost everyone will be after the greatest pitcher of this generation. The Yankees need pitching help, he could stay in Cali with the Angels or Giants, and the Astros could swoop in and throw some money at him. But he’s from Dallas and his hometown Texas Rangers may be the perfect fit for him to accept his last big contract, and if Corey Seager joins him, that may be even more reason to go. Chris Woodward has solid ties with the Dodgers and with the money they’re willing to spend, they may be able to give Kershaw $30m+ a year which would be more than most could offer the 33-year-old. I like this potential marriage a lot, and what a win it would be for the Rangers if they landed both Kershaw and Seager in the same offseason.

Kevin Gausman
Starting Pitcher/ Age: 31/ Career: BAL ’13-’18, ATL ’18-’19, CIN ’19, SF ’20-’21
Achievements: 1x All-Star
From: San Francisco/ To: LA Angels/ Contract: 4 years, $96m
Other Potential Options: San Francisco, Seattle, NY Yankees, Houston
2021 Stats: 14-6, 2.81 ERA, 227 Ks, 1.04 WHIP

In 2019 I had the Angels getting Gerrit Cole, then last year I had them getting Trevor Bauer, so I’ve learned from my mistakes and will not predict them signing a big name for a third straight year. But, Gausman on the other hand can be a perfect fit as LA will reportedly be looking to spend on all-around pitching help in the ‘pen and starters. After posting back-to-back stellar years with the Giants, headlined by his 2.81 ERA this year, he’ll be poised to cash in this offseason heading into his age-31 season. Although all the usual suspects will be checking in on him, this is a perfect guy for the Angels to begin to build their rotation around and rely on as their ace alongside Ohtani. The Angels have been passing up opportunities year after year now with pitching, they need to get this signing done. And no Noah Syndergaard is not enough.

Marcus Stroman
Starting Pitcher/ Age: 30/ Career: TOR ’14-’19, NYM ’19-’21
Achievements: 1x All-Star, 1x Gold Glove
From: NY Mets/ To: NY Mets/ Contract: 5 years, $120m
Other Potential Options: CHI White Sox, San Diego, Seattle, Detroit, Philadelphia
2021 Stats: 10-13, 3.02 ERA, 158 Ks, 1.15 WHIP

After accepting the qualifying offer last offseason, Stroman had arguably his best season in the bigs for a struggling Mets squad. Now looking to cash in, Stro is only just hitting his stride and there’s a ton of reason to believe he should land a 4-5 year deal because of it. A bunch of teams will be looking at the star right-hander, and that includes the Padres and White Sox who may be looking to add an extra arm to their already loaded rotations. But the price may be too high, and now that Noah Syndergaard is gone, I think Stroman is going to be as important to retain as anyone this offseason for the Mets. In the end I think they get it done, even if it’s on a deal well past $100m total. We saw Eduardo Rodriguez get $77m so there is no reason $100m+ can’t be likely for Stroman.

Justin Verlander (WRITTEN BEFORE HE SIGNED WITH ASTROS)
Starting Pitcher/ Age: 39/ Career: DET ’05-’17, HOU ’17-’21
Achievements: WS Champion (’17), 2x AL Cy Young (’11, ’19), ALCS MVP (’17), AL Rookie of the Year (’06), 8x All-Star, 3x MLB Wins leader, 1x AL ERA leader, 5x AL Strikeout leader
From: Houston/ To: NY Yankees/ Contract: 1 year, $15m
Other Potential Options: NY Mets, Houston, Boston, Detroit, San Francisco
2021 Stats: DNP – Rehabbing Tommy John Surgery

Another future Hall-Of-Famer on the market, Verlander has missed all of 2020 and 2021 after undergoing Tommy John Surgery. And now heading into his age-39 season, nothing more than a 1-year deal seems feasible as Verlander will probably pitch through a ton of limitations all through 2022. Regardless a lot of teams will be looking at him, and that includes the Mets and Astros who need rotation help. The Red Sox can also be a sneaky team in the sweepstakes as they look to replace Rodriguez, and his former squad the Tigers have emerged as a possibility. But in the end, the report is he wants to stay on the East coast and the Yankees may be the team to give him the best chance at competing. A low risk, high reward signing for the Bronx Bombers who are looking to bolster their rotation.

Robbie Ray
Starting Pitcher/ Age: 30/ Career: DET ’14, ARI ’15-’20, TOR ’20-’21
Achievements: AL Cy Young (’21), 1x All-Star, AL ERA leader (’21), AL Strikeouts leader (’21)
From: Toronto/ To: San Francisco/ Contract: 5 years, $130m
Other Potential Options: NY Mets, Toronto, NY Yankees, LA Angels
2021 Stats: 13-7, 2.84 ERA, 248 Ks, 1.04 WHIP

After another dominant year, the flame throwing lefty will be a hot commodity on the market this offseason and should demand a similar contract as Marcus Stroman, in the range of 4-5 years for $110m-$130m. At first I thought the Blue Jays would do everything in their power to retain Ray, but after extending Jose Berrios for 7-years it might be a little more difficult. Still I could see him going back, but I also think a few more enticing offers will be on the table from both New York teams and possibly the Angels if they look to continue to upgrade. But if the Giants lose Kevin Gausman, they’re going to be ready to spend big on one of these other top starters especially with Johnny Cueto and Anthony DeSclafani also on the market. Although the Yankees and Mets could be solid choices, the Giants and Blue Jays in my mind seem like the likely destinations.

Zack Greinke
Starting Pitcher/ Age: 38/ Career: KC ’04-’10, MIL ’11-’12, LAA ’12, LAD ’13-’15, ARI ’16-’19, HOU ’19-’21
Achievements: AL Cy Young (’09), 6x All-Star, 6x Gold Glove, 2x Silver Slugger, 2x MLB ERA leader (’09, ’15)
From: Houston/ To: San Diego/ Contract: 2 years, $23m (1 year, $13m Team Option in 2023)
Other Potential Options: Houston, NY Yankees, Boston, LA Angels, LA Dodgers
2021 Stats: 11-6, 4.16 ERA, 120 Ks, 1.17 WHIP

Rounding out the Cy Young winners on this year’s free agency list, Greinke’s massive seven year deal he signed with the Diamondbacks came to an end in a year where he appeared in his first World Series of his career. Now heading into his age-38 season, Greinke has shown he still has valuable worth as a 2 or 3 in a rotation competing for a World Series title. A ton of teams will be in on the great, and that should include the Yankees, Red Sox, and Angels who all could be looking for a cheaper impactful veteran. The Dodgers could also be in on a reunion if they lose Kershaw and/or Scherzer but I think the Padres could be a squad that takes him away. He had arguably the best year of his career in 2015 playing in SoCal and with Bob Melvin and an already stacked rotation, Greinke can hop in as the 3 or 4 along with Darvish, Snell, Paddack, Lamet, and the incoming of Mackenzie Gore. I don’t see Greinke signing for too much, as something in the range of $10m-$15m a year for a couple of years should be realistic. The only thing left for him to chase is that ring, and I think he’ll be choosing a squad that gives him the best chance to do just that.

Carlos Rodón
Starting Pitcher/ Age: 29/ Career: CWS ’15-’21
Achievements: 1x All-Star
From: CHI White Sox/ To: St. Louis/ Contract: 4 years, $73m
Other Potential Options: NY Yankees, Detroit, Seattle, CHI Cubs
2021 Stats: 13-5, 2.37 ERA, 185 Ks, 0.96 WHIP

Another player capitalizing on the most opportune time to have a career year, Rodon posted a 2.37 ERA earning his first all-star nod and pitching a no hitter in 2021. Because of this, he should be able to land a solid multi-year deal this offseason, and if E-Rod can land a 5 for 77, I imagine Rodon lands something in the same range. Several teams will be interested, especially teams that can use a dominant lefty. I think rebuilding teams that are looking to spend will be in on him including the Tigers, Mariners, and Cubs. He also seems like a great fit for the Yankees, but one sleeper I think who can snag him is the Cardinals. With Carlos Martinez, Jon Lester, and J.A. Happ all coming off of the books, the team will probably be shopping a lefty starter to add to a rotation of Flaherty, Wainwright, Kim, and returning Hudson and Mikolas. The Cards are a sneaky team that isn’t in on a lot of the top free agents, but I don’t see them not coming away with at least one notable one.

Andrew Chafin
Relief Pitcher/ Age: 31/ Career: ARI ’14-’20, CHC ’20-’21, OAK ’21
From: Oakland/ To: Milwaukee/ Contract: 3 years, $36m
Other Potential Options: Philadelphia, LA Dodgers, Cincinnati, Boston
2021 Stats: 5 SVs, 1.83 ERA, 64 Ks, 0.93 WHIP

The hefty lefty hits the market and is probably the most notable non-closing reliever out there this offseason. Over the last few seasons, Chafin has been one of the most consistent middle relievers in the game, posting a 1.83 ERA in 2021 in a season split between the Cubs and A’s. He should command a 3 or 4 year deal heading into his age-32 season, and one team that could be high on him is the Brewers. The reigning NL Central champs already have a dynamic duo in the back of the bullpen with the league’s best closer Josh Hader and 2020 NL Rookie of the Year Devin Williams. Daniel Norris will be on the market too so the team can look to upgrade their primary left in the ‘pen. A 7th, 8th, 9th of Chafin, Williams, and Hader could be among the best in the league.

Kenley Jansen
Closing Pitcher/ Age: 34/ Career: LAD ’10-’21
Achievements: WS Champion (’20), 2x NL Reliever of the Year (’16, ’17), 3x All-Star, NL Saves leader (’17)
From: LA Dodgers/ To: Philadelphia/ Contract: 3 years, $37m (1 year, $14m Team Option in 2024)
Other Potential Options: LA Dodgers, San Diego, Seattle, Texas
2021 Stats: 38 SVs, 2.22 ERA, 36 Ks, 1.04 WHIP

Easily the biggest name on the relief pitching market this offseason, Jansen has been one of the league’s best ninth inning guys for a decade now. With 350 career saves headed into his age-34 season, Jansen may be looking for one last big contract. The analytics don’t love him though, and although he posted a 2.22 ERA this year there’s reason to believe his better days are behind him. The Dodgers seem to be on the fence on bringing him back, as Blake Treinen and Tommy Kahnle remain under contract as well as a few impressive young bullpen arms that could take Jansen’s spot away. Even if it’s not the Dodgers, there are several teams desperate for bullpen help and a dominant closer that will have him high on their radar. The Phillies seem like the obvious choice as they’ve been without a legitimate closer for well near five years now and should have bullpen help as target number one this offseason. A new 3-year deal around $12m AAV could be more than anyone else wants to give Jansen, and could ensure him being a Phillie next year.

Raisel Iglesias
Closing Pitcher/ Age: 32/ Career: CIN ’15-’20, LAA ’21
From: LA Angels/ To: LA Angels/ Contract: 4 years, $66m
Other Potential Options: Miami, Detroit, Seattle, San Diego, LA Dodgers
2021 Stats: 34 SVs, 2.57 ERA, 103 Ks, 0.93 WHIP

To start his career with the Reds, Iglesias’ numbers were always up and down with high walk numbers for a ninth inning guy. But after getting traded to the Halos, he stepped in with a dominant 2021 posting 34 saves and 103 strikeouts. Now on the market for the first time in his career, Raisel should demand a multi-year deal with big closer money. The Marlins, Tigers, and Mariners are all teams that need a future closer and could give Iglesias more than many others. The Angels crosstown rivals the Dodgers could decide to go all in if they let Kenley Jansen walk, but I think the Halos retain him. The Angels have whiffed on closers a bunch in the past, and now that they have a dominant one they can’t let him walk.

Mark Melancon
Closing Pitcher/ Age: 37/ Career: NYY ’09-’10, HOU ’10-’11, BOS ’12, PIT ’13-’16, WAS ’16, SF ’17-’19, ATL ’19-’20, SD ’21
Achievements: NL Reliever of the Year (’15), 4x All-Star, 2x NL Saves leader (’15, ’21)
From: San Diego/ To: Toronto/ Contract: 1 year, $7.5m
Other Potential Options: LA Dodgers, San Diego, San Francisco
2021 Stats: 39 SVs, 2.23 ERA, 59 Ks, 1.22 WHIP

And rounding out the top tier free agents we have one of the better closers over the past decade again on the market in Mark Melancon. After settling for a 1-year deal at the league minimum with the Padres, he did nothing but lead the NL in saves with 39 and post a 2.23 ERA. Now heading into his age-37 season, Melancon will definitely get a ton of interest as a guaranteed closer again, but I don’t see him landing more than a 1 or 2 year deal. The Padres could have interest in bringing him back, and the Giants may be interested in a reunion with their opening at closer. But one team that may go all in is the Blue Jays who are looking to make a huge leap into the favorites in the AL East in 2022. After signing Kirby Yates to a 1-year deal last offseason, they lost him to injury and relied on a closer by committee between Jordan Romano and Joakim Soria. Although Romano has a lot of potential, Melancon can add some depth and give them a reliable shut down ninth inning guy. I think this is a move Toronto should definitely try to make.
