Paul’s 2023 Big Board/Mock Draft 1.0 (12/28)

The 2022-23 College Basketball season is well under way, and we have now been introduced to some of the top guys to look forward to in the 2023 NBA Draft. But not only in the college ranks, we also have a few stars going the Overtime Elite route (Amen and Ausar Thompson), the G-League route (Scoot Henderson, Sidy Cissoko, and Leonard Miller), and the overseas route (Victor Wembanyama, Rayan Rupert, and more).

This draft looks to be one of the most highly anticipated ones in recent memory, headlined by French unicorn Victor Wembanyama, a prospect drawing comparisons to LeBron regarding hype, and what teams are dreaming of winning the lottery to get. But besides Victor, we have several other guys, many at the collegiate level, that look to become stars in the league. So without further ado here is my first version of my 2023 NBA Draft Big Board, including top 15’s for each positions, player write-ups, and my ranking of where they stand on draft boards. Also included this year, keep scrolling for version 1.0 of my NBA Mock Draft. Draft order was simulated through tankathon’s lottery and current team records. Sit back, enjoy, and get familiar with the league’s future stars and some guys you may want to look out for in college hoops!

– A great shot blocker who can step out and hit the three, not a terrible consolation prize on the C market

Dereck Lively II
C RK: #3, OVR RK: #21
Duke (Freshman)
7’1 | 230 lbs | DOB: 2-12-04 (18)
22-23 Stats: 4.4 pts, 3.7 reb, 2 blk, 60% FG

Paul’s Notes:
– #1 ranked recruit
– Who once seemed like a competitor to Wembanyama for the top pick, Lively is on a free fall on draft boards with a disappointing start to the season

Kyle Filipowski
C RK: #4, OVR RK: #26
Duke (Freshman)
7’0 | 230 lbs | DOB: 11-7-03 (19)
22-23 Stats: 14.4 pts, 8.9 reb, 1.4 stl, 1.3 ast

Paul’s Notes:
– #7 ranked 5-star recruit
– He’s been exactly what Lively was supposed to be, showing shooting prowess as well as top notch rim protecting

Adem Bona
C RK: #5, OVR RK: #30
UCLA (Freshman)
6’10 | 235 lbs | DOB: 3-28-03 (19)
22-23 Stats: 7.3 pts, 4.5 reb, 1.2 blk, 63.6% FG

Paul’s Notes:
– #17 ranked 5-star recruit
– He hasn’t had the biggest role early on and may need to improve drastically to make it worth declaring

Ousmane N’Diaye
C RK: #6, OVR RK: #35
Grupo Baskonia (Spain)
6’11 | 210 lbs | DOB: 3-19-04 (18)
22-23 Stats: 9 pts, 6.7 reb, 0.9 blk, 0.4 ast – LEB

Paul’s Notes:
– He can shoot and has great size to be a true and dominant big in the NBA

Mouhamed Gueye
C RK: #7, OVR RK: #37
Washington State (Sophomore)
6’11 | 210 lbs | DOB: 11-9-02 (20)
22-23 Stats: 13.5 pts, 8.2 reb, 1.5 ast, 0.9 blk

Paul’s Notes:
– #100 ranked prospect of 2021
– Coming into his own with a smooth low post scoring game

Ryan Kalkbrenner
C RK: #8, OVR RK: #43
Creighton (Junior)
7’1 | 260 lbs | DOB: 1-17-02 (20)
22-23 Stats: 15.1 pts, 6.9 reb, 1.5 blk, 76.1% FG

Paul’s Notes:
– He’s come into his own greatly this year, and is looking like a good 2nd round big body

James Nnaji
C RK: #9, OVR RK: #47
Barça (Spain)
6’10 | 198 lbs | DOB: 8-14-04 (18)
22-23 Stats: 2.9 pts, 1.8 reb, 0.7 blk, 63.2% FG – ACB/EuroLeague

Paul’s Notes:
– Is young and raw but shows some NBA promise, may take a couple of years to come over

Coleman Hawkins
C RK: #10, OVR RK: #52
Illinois (Junior)
6’10 | 225 lbs | DOB: 12-10-01 (21)
22-23 Stats: 9.1 pts, 6.1 reb, 3.8 ast, 1.4 blk

Paul’s Notes:
– A much improved three-point shot with tenacity on the defensive end, can rise to early 2nd round

Adama Sanogo
C RK: #11, OVR RK: #53
UConn (Junior)
6’9 | 245 lbs | DOB: 2-12-02 (20)
22-23 Stats: 18.6 pts, 7.2 reb, 1.2 stl, 42.9% 3P

Paul’s Notes:
– Dominant big at the college ranks but a bit undersized for the pros. Should still have late 2nd round looks

Oscar Tshiebwe
C RK: #12, OVR RK: #57
Kentucky (Senior)
6’9 | 260 lbs | DOB: 11-27-99 (23)
22-23 Stats: 15 pts, 13 reb, 1.7 ast, 1.6 blk

Paul’s Notes:
– Again, one of the best bigs in the nation but lacks size and consistent shot making to be a top NBA big man

Zach Edey
C RK: #13
Purdue (Junior)
7’4 | 295 lbs | DOB: 5-14-02 (20)
22-23 Stats: 22.6 pts, 13.9 reb, 2.2 blk, 62.8% FG

Paul’s Notes:
– The NPOY favorite, Edey has improved his game big time, and with his size he should have looks in the league when he’s fully polished, maybe in 2024

Trevon Brazile
C RK: #14
Arkansas (Sophomore)
6’10 | 212 lbs | DOB: 1-7-03 (19)
22-23 Stats: 11.8 pts, 6 reb, 1.2 blk, 37.9% 3P
(Out for Season – Torn ACL)

Paul’s Notes:
– He can handle the ball, is elusive, and dominant in the post. Tearing his ACL could cost him a shot at the 2023 draft. Returning can get him big looks in 2024

Drew Timme
C RK: #15
Gonzaga (Senior)
6’10 | 235 lbs | DOB: 9-9-00 (22)
22-23 Stats: 22.1 pts, 8.3 reb, 3.3 ast, 63.7% FG

Paul’s Notes:
– Has dominant post moves and is quite athletic for his size. Whether he comes out or not it would be a shock to imagine no one would draft him

OTHER NOTABLE C’s IN THE NATION:

Efe Abogidi (NBA G-League Ignite), Donovan Clingan (UConn, FR.), Charles Bediako (Alabama, SO.), Hunter Dickinson (Michigan, JR.), Jamarion Sharp (Western Kentucky, SO.)
