MLB Free Agent Predictions 2025

TOP TIER:

Danny Jansen
C | Age: 30 | Career: TOR ’18-’24, BOS ’24
From: Boston | To: CHI Cubs | Contract: 3 years, $24m
Other Potential Options: Cleveland, San Diego, Detroit
2024 Season Stats: .205 AVG, 9 HR, 24 RBI, .658 OPS
Career Stats: .220 AVG, 74 HR, 220 RBI, .727 OPS — 7 seasons

Leading off the list, we have the only real starting level Catcher on the market in Danny Jansen. He’s coming off an off year, losing his starting role in Toronto then backing up Connor Wong in Boston. He still holds a lot of potential, as an established power bat at only 30. The Cubs are the only team looking for a true starting catcher, while the Guardians, Padres, and Tigers should check-in to boost their core. If he gets a multi-year deal, it’ll probably be with the Cubs who burnt through several catchers last year.

Travis d’Arnaud (WRITTEN BEFORE HE SIGNED WITH LA ANGELS)
C | Age: 36 | Career: NYM ’13-’19, LAD ’19, TB ’19, ATL ’20-’24
Achievements: WS Champion (’21), 1x All-Star, 1x Silver Slugger
From: Atlanta | To: Minnesota | Contract: 1 year, $8m
Other Potential Options: CHI Cubs, Detroit, Houston, Texas
2024 Season Stats: .238 AVG, 15 HR, 48 RBI, .739 OPS
Career Stats: .248 AVG, 123 HR, 438 RBI, .735 OPS — 12 seasons

As a key part of the juggernaut offense that has run the NL over the past few years, it was a bit of a shock that the Braves declined d’Arnaud’s team option. Whether they’re looking to upgrade with a new backup catcher or not, Travis should easily find a new home as a platoon Catcher/DH option against lefties. Heading into his age-36 season, a 1-year deal should be all he lands, for similar to what the Braves declined. The Cubs and Tigers could look at him as a Catcher, while the Astros and Rangers may look for a DH upgrade. The Twins can ultimately be the best fit, with an opening at DH and being able to catch some innings relieving the core of Ryan Jeffers and Christian Vazquez.

Pete Alonso
1B | Age: 30 | Career: NYM ’19-’24
Achievements: 4x All-Star, NL Rookie of the Year (’19), 1x All-MLB First Team, 1x MLB HR leader (’19), 1x NL RBI leader (’22)
From: NY Mets | To: NY Mets | Contract: 6 years, $177m
Other Potential Options: CHI Cubs, Seattle, CHI White Sox, Houston, NY Yankees
2024 Season Stats: .240 AVG, 34 HR, 88 RBI, .788 OPS
Career Stats: .249 AVG, 226 HR, 586 RBI, .854 OPS — 6 seasons

By far the biggest name available amongst the infield free agents, Alonso enters looking to reset the market for 1B. He has been the best power hitter in the game since being called up in 2019, while providing clutch moments and an above average glove at 1B. As a Boras client, Pete will definitely entertain many offers, as I anticipate the Cubs, Mariners, and Astros as being the hardest teams to threaten to take Alonso away from New York. As we know, if the Mets want him they can offer him the most money, and something in the 5 or 6 year range for under $200m is a high likelihood. I don’t see Steve Cohen letting their homegrown masher leave.

Paul Goldschmidt
1B | Age: 37 | Career: ARI ’11-’18, STL ’19-’24
Achievements: NL MVP (’22), 7x All-Star, 5x Silver Slugger, 4x Gold Glove, 2x NL Hank Aaron Award (’13,’22), 1x All-MLB First Team, 1x NL Homerun leader (’13), 1x NL RBI leader (’13)
From: St. Louis | To: Houston | Contract: 1 year, $10m
Other Potential Options: San Francisco, NY Mets, CHI Cubs, LA Angels, Arizona
2024 Season Stats: .245 AVG, 22 HR, 65 RBI, .716 OPS
Career Stats: .289 AVG, 2,056 hits, 362 HR, 1,187 RBI, .892 OPS — 14 seasons

It’s hard to believe that after 14 great seasons, Goldy is hitting the free agent market for the first time in his career. He’s undoubtedly coming off of his worst year as a big leaguer, and will be entering his age-37 season. I think contenders will look at him as a platoon 1B/full-time DH option, as he may be able to extend his career by just focusing on DH. The Giants, Mets, and his homegrown team in Arizona should all be top options that will check in on him. Ultimately, I see him taking a 1-year deal to join his favorite team growing up, the Astros. In Houston, he has a full-time 1B opportunity, with DH reps still an option if Yordan Alvarez can play some outfield.

Christian Walker
1B | Age: 34 | Career: BAL ’14-’15, ARI ’17-’24
Achievements: 3x Gold Glove
From: Arizona | To: San Francisco | Contract: 4 years, $86m (Team Option after Year 3)
Other Potential Options: San Diego, Arizona, NY Mets, Houston, NY Yankees
2024 Season Stats: .251 AVG, 26 HR, 84 RBI, .803 OPS
Career Stats: .250 AVG, 147 HR, 443 RBI, .793 OPS — 10 seasons

After the departure of Goldschmidt in Arizona, Walker stepped in as the full-time 1B and became a perennial gold glover, while being snubbed from the all-star game this year. He’s probably seen as the 2nd best 1B on the market behind Pete, but he, similar to Goldy, is in his mid-30’s. Anyone who is serious about signing Alonso, and whiff, will hold Walker up as the backup plan. He’ll likely only get a 3-or-4 year deal, which could be more intriguing for certain teams. The Giants to me seem like the perfect fit, as they’re a team in need of a power bat, and no clear 1B with LaMonte Wade and Wilmer Flores platooning over the last couple of years. Add him to an infield with Matt Chapman and you also have two of the best defensive gloves guarding each of the lines. If not the Giants, the Padres, Astros, and D-Backs all should be high on him.

Gleyber Torres
2B/SS | Age: 28 | Career: NYY ’18-’24
Achievements: 2x All-Star
From: NY Yankees | To: Seattle | Contract: 1 year, $18m
Other Potential Options: Miami, CHI Cubs, NY Yankees, Detroit, Kansas City
2024 Season Stats: .257 AVG, 15 HR, 63 RBI, .709 OPS
Career Stats: .265 AVG, 138 HR, 441 RBI, .774 OPS — 7 seasons

Torres bursted onto the scene as one of the faces of the new look Yankees when he was first called up in 2018. Since then, he has seen a slow decline in offensive productivity while also showing a lack of hustle and effort on defense. The ceiling is still high though for the 28-year-old who may need a change of scenery to get his career back on track. I don’t see him returning to the Yankees, but rather getting a nice and hefty 1-year deal to prove his worth before testing the market again next year at 29. The Cubs, Marlins, and Tigers seem like solid fits that can desperately use his potential offensive upside. But the Mariners are closest of all of them to contend, and have a gaping hole at 2B currently. Joining Seattle for a 1-year deal would be the best of both worlds in my eyes.

Jorge Polanco
2B | Age: 31 | Career: MIN ’14-’23, SEA ’24
Achievements: 1x All-Star
From: Seattle | To: Pittsburgh | Contract: 1 year, $10m
Other Potential Options: Seattle, Boston, NY Yankees, Detroit
2024 Season Stats: .213 AVG, 16 HR, 45 RBI, .651 OPS
Career Stats: .263 AVG, 128 HR, 492 RBI, .765 OPS — 11 seasons

Polanco saw a pretty big decline in productivity in his first season out of a Twins uniform. He spent 10 years in Minnesota as the main 2B, and although the move to Seattle was probably a bit of a shell shock, it doesn’t give him much of a market for a big contract. He’s only 31, and a 1-year prove it deal I think is most likely for him to get a chance at a 3 or 4 year deal next year. The Mariners could look at re-signing him, while the Red Sox and Yankees need some infield help. Ultimately, I like the Pirates to snag him on a short deal to place him at 2B alongside Oneil Cruz and Ke’Bryan Hayes in that infield.

Willy Adames
SS | Age: 29 | Career: TB ’18-’21, MIL ’21-’24
From: Milwaukee | To: San Francisco | Contract: 7 years, $182m (Player Option after Year 4)
Other Potential Options: Atlanta, Cleveland, Detroit, San Diego, NY Mets
2024 Season Stats: .251 AVG, 32 HR, 112 RBI, 21 SB
Career Stats: .248 AVG, 150 HR, 472 RBI, .766 OPS — 7 seasons

Adames is by far the best SS option on this year’s market and is looked at with high upside and versatility to potentially play either 2B or 3B as well. Realistically, with his power and adaptability he probably is more of a long term 2B despite solid defense as a SS. At any rate, this will widen his market with several teams already after him and the likelihood of landing a 6 or 7 year deal at only 29. The Braves and Tigers have clear needs at SS, while the Mets and Padres could look at him as more of a 2B. The Giants though, have been willing to spend and are looking to fill out their infield with more established bats. Adames fits in perfectly for them, with both SS and 2B wide open.

Ha-seong Kim
SS/2B | Age: 29 | Career: SD ’21-’24
Achievements: 1x Gold Glove
From: San Diego | To: Toronto | Contract: 4 years, $53m (Player Option after Year 3)
Other Potential Options: San Francisco, NY Yankees, Detroit, San Diego
2024 Season Stats: .233 AVG, 11 HR, 47 RBI, 22 SB
Career Stats: .242 AVG, 47 HR, 200 RBI, 78 SB, .326 OBP — 4 seasons

Kim has established himself almost immediately after coming into the league from Korea in 2021. He has been a key part of the Padres’ runs over those years, even taking over full time SS duties from Xander Bogaerts due to his stellar glove. His bat is only okay, but he brings speed and a good eye to the plate. He’s perfect for a team who already has some power hitters and are looking to contend. The Yankees, Giants, and Padres seem like immediately good fits, but I think the Blue Jays will swoop in and grab him. With the expiring contracts of Bo Bichette and Vlad Jr. looming, Toronto is going to want to go all-in in 2025, while also having some security in case they lose a middle infielder. They can afford to overpay for someone who will sure up their defense in the infield.

Alex Bregman
3B | Age: 31 | Career: HOU ’16-’24
Achievements: 2x WS Champion (’17,’22), 2x All-Star, 1x Silver Slugger, 1x Gold Glove, 1x All-MLB Second Team
From: Houston | To: Washington | Contract: 8 years, $220m (Player Option after Year 2)
Other Potential Options: Toronto, Philadelphia, Seattle, Detroit, NY Yankees, Houston
2024 Season Stats: .260 AVG, 26 HR, 75 RBI, .768 OPS
Career Stats: .272 AVG, 1,132 hits, 191 HR, 663 RBI, .848 OPS — 9 seasons

Bregman enters his first ever free agency after accumulating 9 great seasons as one of the Astros’ key bats for their 2 World Series wins. Entering his age-31 season might deter contenders from offering him a huge deal, leading way for an up-and-coming team to overpay for him. The Blue Jays have a big hole to fill at 3B, but also need to think about their future of extending Vlad and Bo Bichette. I like the idea of the Phillies being a sleeper, but that would only be the case if Harper moves back to the OF and Alec Bohm moves to 1B. Ultimately, the Nationals are on the verge of being able to contend again, and they’re going to need a proven winner to become their franchise’s cornerstone. This could be a perfect fit for Bregman to bring his 2 championships to a rebuilding franchise and try to build a winner as the face of it. An added opt out early on could be likely if things go south.

Juan Soto
RF | Age: 26 | Career: WSH ’18-’22, SD ’22-’23, NYY ’24
Achievements: WS Champion (’19), 4x All-Star, 5x Silver Slugger, 3x All-MLB First Team, 1x All-MLB Second Team, NL batting champion (’20)
From: NY Yankees | To: NY Yankees | Contract: 13 years, $663m (Multiple Player Options)
Other Potential Options: NY Mets, Philadelphia, LA Dodgers, Toronto, Boston
2024 Season Stats: .288 AVG, 41 HR, 109 RBI, .989 OPS
Career Stats: .285 AVG, 201 HR, 592 RBI, .953 OPS — 7 seasons

Well this is the one that everyone is waiting for and probably skipped through all the other players to see. Soto is arguably the best player in the league and couldn’t be gifted a better time to hit free agency at only 26. The likelihood is that he will land a deal that will take him to the doorstep of turning 40, either 13 or 14 years in my opinion. He’s also going to push for what Ohtani got last year at $700m, and I expect the final number to be north of $650m. I was way off with my Ohtani final number last year, mainly because I couldn’t imagine a team spending more than $400m on one single player. But it is a new age and the big money teams are going to drop every dollar they can on a franchise changing talent. The Yankees, Mets, Phillies, Dodgers, Blue Jays, and Red Sox seem to be the options that will, at the very least, get meet-ups with the star. The Blue Jays and Sox seem like a long shot, while the Dodgers and Phillies with their extremely high payrolls, make me think they will bid but come no where close to where the New York teams are willing to go. That comes down to the Mets and Yankees, who I think will have an all-out bidding war on the star. Soto is built for New York and is a perfect centerpiece for either franchise to have a consistent winner over the next decade-plus. In the end, I lean more towards him returning to the Yankees, although I look at it as the Mets’ bidding to lose. Steve Cohen will be willing to pay any dollar on him, so in the end it may come down to preference.

Teoscar Hernández
LF | Age: 32 | Career: HOU ’16-’17, TOR ’17-’22, SEA ’23, LAD ’24
Achievements: WS Champion (’24), 2x All-Star, 3x Silver Slugger, 2x All-MLB Second Team
From: LA Dodgers | To: LA Dodgers | Contract: 4 years, $92m
Other Potential Options: Toronto, Boston, Baltimore, Detroit, San Diego
2024 Season Stats: .272 AVG, 33 HR, 99 RBI, .840 OPS
Career Stats: .263 AVG, 192 HR, 572 RBI, .808 OPS — 9 seasons

Hernandez enters free agency again after settling on a high AAV 1-year deal last offseason with the eventual champs. He followed up with what may have been his best season at the plate, being named an all star, silver slugger, and Champion all in the same year. Now entering his age-32 season, a 3 or 4 year deal should be easy to find for a team who needs his bat in the middle of their lineup. I think the Red Sox, Padres, and Orioles are all going to be hard ballers for Teoscar, especially Boston who is looking for a franchise changing power hitter. But his love for the Dodgers is mutual, and I don’t see him leaving. If the Dodgers want him back and offer around $100m I think he’ll be back in LA. If the Dodgers decide to save some money though and focus more on pitching, I think he’ll head to Boston.

Anthony Santander
RF | Age: 30 | Career: BAL ’17-’24
Achievements: 1x All-Star, 1x Silver Slugger
From: Baltimore | To: Kansas City | Contract: 5 years, $100m
Other Potential Options: NY Yankees, Baltimore, San Diego, LA Dodgers, Boston
2024 Season Stats: .235 AVG, 44 HR, 102 RBI, .814 OPS
Career Stats: .246 AVG, 155 HR, 435 RBI, .776 OPS — 8 seasons

Santander is probably looked at as some sort of consolation prize to teams who miss out on Soto or Teoscar, but there’s no denying his worth as an all-star bat. He’s only 30, and coming off of his best season clobbering 44 homers and 102 RBI’s in the middle of the Orioles lineup. Baltimore has so many outfield prospects so a reunion seems unlikely, leading way for an up-and-coming team who needs a bat. So in steps the Royals, who made it all the way to the ALDS this year with practically no offense outside of Bobby Witt Jr. and Salvy Perez. Santander is the perfect bat to put in the middle of that order to help them compete for years to come. I like this fit a lot and they may even be willing to go up to 5 years for him.

Jurickson Profar
LF | Age: 32 | Career: TEX ’12-’18, OAK ’19, SD ’20-’22/’23-’24, COL ’23
Achievements: 1x All-Star, 1x Silver Slugger
From: San Diego | To: San Diego | Contract: 2 years, $16.5m
Other Potential Options: Boston, Toronto, St. Louis, LA Dodgers
2024 Season Stats: .280 AVG, 24 HR, 85 RBI, .839 OPS
Career Stats: .245 AVG, 111 HR, 444 RBI, 57 SB, .726 OPS — 11 seasons

After struggling to even find a team to play for in 2024, Profar ended up having the best year of his career in his age-31 season. There should not be a lack of teams interested in him this time around, as a multi-year deal is likely. He’s only 32, with speed, power, and a good glove as a corner outfielder. If teams like the Dodgers, Blue Jays, or Red Sox miss on the higher end outfield prospects, they’ll look to Profar as a backup option. I think he’ll return to the Padres though, as he has made a solid core of Jackson Merrill, Fernando Tatis Jr., and himself this past season in the outfield.

Tyler O’Neill
LF | Age: 29 | Career: STL ’18-’23, BOS ’24
Achievements: 2x Gold Glove
From: Boston | To: Minnesota | Contract: 3 years, $45m
Other Potential Options: Detroit, LA Angels, Boston, Cincinnati, San Diego
2024 Season Stats: .241 AVG, 31 HR, 61 RBI, .847 OPS
Career Stats: .246 AVG, 109 HR, 278 RBI, 44 SB, .792 OPS — 7 seasons

O’Neill embraced his only year in Boston with his greatest power season, slugging 31 homeruns for the Red Sox. He’s by far the best defensive outfielder on this top tier list, and will provide a promising average with a mix of pop. At only 29, he should definitely command a multi-year deal from a team that needs some power from the outfield and a boost in the middle of the order. The first team, and best one, that comes to mind is the Twins, who could be losing Max Kepler and Manuel Margot in free agency, while Alex Kiriloff shockingly opted to retire at only 26. The Red Sox bringing him back could be the second best option, while teams like the Reds and Tigers could check in on him.

Joc Pederson
DH | Age: 33 | Career: LAD ’14-’20, CHC ’21, ATL ’21, SF ’22-’23, ARI ’24
Achievements: 2x WS Champion (’20,’21), 2x All-Star
From: Arizona | To: Detroit | Contract: 1 year, $10m
Other Potential Options: Minnesota, Kansas City, NY Yankees
2024 Season Stats: .275 AVG, 23 HR, 64 RBI, .908 OPS
Career Stats: .241 AVG, 209 HR, 549 RBI, .811 OPS — 11 seasons

Well it wouldn’t be a free agency prediction article if it didn’t feature Joc Pederson. The lefty slugger opted out of his deal with Arizona yet again to test free agency. He turned down $14m for 2025 and will likely not see as high of an offer on the market. Regardless, he’s still a good lefty bat and DH option for a contender. I’ve linked the Yankees to him for about 4 years now, and I won’t go that route again as it doesn’t seem likely. The Tigers though could be a perfect fit, a team that needs a couple more bats and a well established DH. I expect it to be a 1-year deal, so mark your calendars for this time next year for him to make another appearance on my free agent list.

Blake Snell
SP | Age: 32 | Career: TB ’16-’20, SD ’21-’23, SF ’24
Achievements: 2x Cy Young (’18,’23), 1x All-Star, 1x All-MLB First Team, 1x AL Wins leader (’18), 2x ERA leader (’18,’23), No-Hitter (’24)
From: San Francisco | To: Cincinnati | Contract: 6 years, $192m (Player Option after Year 4)
Other Potential Options: San Francisco, NY Mets, Boston, Philadelphia, LA Dodgers
2024 Season Stats: 5-3, 3.12 ERA, 145 Ks, 1.05 WHIP
Career Stats: 211 GS, 76 Ws, 3.19 ERA, 1,368 Ks, 1.22 WHIP — 9 seasons

Leading off the list of starters is definitely the most high profile name in Blake Snell. After his Cy Young season a year ago, Snell had to settle for a 1-year deal, and after yet another stellar season, he should easily land a multi-year deal this time around. Heading into his age-32 season won’t help him, but teams have been shown to overspend for a high end pitcher. A 6-year deal at around $30m AAV is likely the case, and high profile teams like the Giants, Mets, Red Sox, and Phillies should all check in on him. A sleeper does hide in the shadows though, as Cincinnati has the young core to start making a push. They need an established ace, and with new Manager Terry Francona set to take over, I think they’ll sneak in and spend big on Snell.

Corbin Burnes
SP | Age: 30 | Career: MIL ’18-’23, BAL ’24
Achievements: NL Cy Young (’21), 4x All-Star, 2x All-MLB First Team, 1x NL ERA leader (’21), 1x NL Strikeout leader (’22), Combined No-Hitter (’21)
From: Baltimore | To: NY Mets | Contract: 7 years, $213.5m (Player Option after Year 4)
Other Potential Options: Baltimore, LA Dodgers, Detroit, CHI Cubs, Boston
2024 Season Stats: 15-9, 2.92 ERA, 181 Ks, 1.10 WHIP
Career Stats: 138 GS, 60 Ws, 3.19 ERA, 1,051 Ks, 1.06 WHIP — 7 seasons

Burnes has been one of, if not the most, dominant right hander in the game since his break onto the scene in 2021. After being dealt to Baltimore, he had another dominant season in his walk year and will be poised to land a huge contract. He’ll be entering his age-30 season, making it a perfect time to see a 7 year deal. The Mets, Orioles, Cubs, and Red Sox are teams that have money and are in need of a high leverage ace to build their rotations around. I think it would be a big loss for the Orioles to not bring him back, while the Tigers and Cubs can become true contenders if they land him. Ultimately, I think the Mets know how badly they need an ace and will be willing to overpay for him. They may be the only ones willing to go over $200m, especially if they miss out on Soto.

Max Fried
SP | Age: 31 | Career: ATL ’17-’24
Achievements: WS Champion (’21), 2x All-Star, 3x Gold Glove, 1x Silver Slugger, 1x All-MLB First Team, 2x All-MLB Second Team
From: Atlanta | To: San Diego | Contract: 5 years, $135m (Player Option after Year 3)
Other Potential Options: Atlanta, San Francisco, NY Mets, Arizona
2024 Season Stats: 11-10, 3.25 ERA, 166 Ks, 1.16 WHIP
Career Stats: 151 GS, 73 Ws, 3.07 ERA, 863 Ks, 1.16 WHIP — 8 seasons

The last of the big three star pitchers available on the market, Fried will be looked at as the backup option to Snell and Burnes. This is not due to performance, but moreso injury history after turning 31. Reporters are predicting anywhere from a 1-year deal with high AAV to a 4 or 5 year deal for the lefty on the market. I think he should definitely be able to land a hefty 5-year deal, as he’s proven that when he’s pitching he’s one of the best lefties in the game. It seems like the Braves may save money and not retain him with Strider’s return looming and Sale, Lopez, Schwellenbach, and more as depth in the rotation. The Padres will be without Joe Musgrove for the forseeable future, and need a high leverage arm to pair with the aging Yu Darvish and Dylan Cease. I like the Padres to bring Fried home to SoCal, and keep building on the consistent winner they are growing.

Jack Flaherty
SP | Age: 29 | Career: STL ’17-’23, BAL ’23, DET ’24, LAD ’24
Achievements: WS Champion (’24), 1x All-MLB Second Team
From: LA Dodgers | To: LA Dodgers | Contract: 5 years, $110m
Other Potential Options: NY Yankees, LA Angels, Cincinnati, St. Louis
2024 Season Stats: 13-7, 3.17 ERA, 194 Ks, 1.07 WHIP
Career Stats: 153 GS, 55 Ws, 3.63 ERA, 942 Ks, 1.18 WHIP — 8 seasons

Flaherty ended up settling on a 1-year deal last offseason with the Tigers and followed up with potentially his best year as a pro. Splitting time in Detroit and LA, Flaherty pitched high leverage and dominant innings on the Dodgers’ run to the World Series, while showing his consistency as a dominant strikeout pitcher is still there. At only 29, he’ll definitely land a multi-year deal this offseason at an AAV north of $20m. The Reds and Angels are a couple of teams that interest me, and I think they can go above and beyond to make him their ace. If Burnes is off the board, the Dodgers should look at bringing back Flaherty. Their surplus of starters will definitely get bigger whether it’s Burnes or Flaherty.

Sean Manaea
SP | Age: 33 | Career: OAK ’16-’21, SD ’22, SF ’23, NYM ’24
Achievements: No-Hitter (’18)
From: NY Mets | To: NY Mets | Contract: 4 years, $92m
Other Potential Options: NY Yankees, Philadelphia, Boston, Cincinnati
2024 Season Stats: 12-6, 3.47 ERA, 184 Ks, 1.08 WHIP
Career Stats: 198 GS, 77 Ws, 4.00 ERA, 1,109 Ks, 1.20 WHIP — 9 seasons

Manaea resurged his career on a short-term deal as the Mets’ ace. Now heading into his age-33 season, he looks reborn with his new rotation and breaking ball that fooled hitters all season. Contenders will be looking at Manaea for a 3 or 4 year deal that should exceed over $20m annually to be a top of the rotation piece. He loved his time with the Mets, and fully embraced the east coast fan base becoming a fan favorite and crediting Pitching Coach Jeremy Hefner to his career saving new mechanics. I think the Mets will re-sign him, regardless of what they do about getting a top of the rotation guy like Burnes or Snell. They need a couple of veteran starters, and 2 of Burnes/Snell/Fried and Manaea/Eovaldi/Buehler I think are very likely.

Justin Verlander
SP | Age: 42 | Career: DET ’05-’17, HOU ’17-’22/’23-’24, NYM ’23
Achievements: 2x WS Champion (’17,’22), 3x AL Cy Young (’11,’19,’22), AL MVP (’11), ALCS MVP (’17), 9x All-Star, 2x All-MLB First Team, Triple Crown (’11), AL Rookie of the Year (’06), AL Comeback Player of the Year (’22), 4x AL Wins leader (’09,’11,’19,’22), 2x AL ERA leader (’11,’22), 5x AL Strikeout leader (’09,’11,’12,’16,’18), 3 No-Hitters (’07,’11,’19)
From: Houston | To: Detroit | Contract: 1 year, $5m
Other Potential Options: Houston, CHI Cubs, Atlanta
2024 Season Stats: 5-6, 5.48 ERA, 74 Ks, 1.38 WHIP
Career Stats: 526 GS, 262 Ws, 3.30 ERA, 3,416 Ks (10th All-Time), 1.13 WHIP — 19 seasons

Verlander hits free agency as the oldest player in baseball and coming off a year that showed the time may be coming to hang it up. It’s amazing that such a late Tommy John Surgery would be followed by a Cy Young season in 2022 and two injury and inconsistent riddled seasons. It has been a high of high’s and a low of low’s for the first ballot Hall-of-Famer over the past few years. Now what will 2025 bring? I don’t see a reunion in Houston being an option as the team will look to build their rotation of the future. I think if retirement is not in the cards yet, he will have a few teams reach out. The Tigers emerge as the best, the team he started on, pitched 13 years for, and will likely be enshrined as a Hall-of-Famer with. He can join a rotation with star Tarik Skubal and a bunch of other young pieces to mentor. It would be a beautiful last chapter for JV.

Max Scherzer
SP | Age: 40 | Career: ARI ’08-’09, DET ’10-’14, WSH ’15-’21, LAD ’21, NYM ’22-’23, TEX ’23-’24
Achievements: 2x WS Champion (’19,’23), 3x Cy Young (’13,’16,’17), 8x All-Star, 2x All-MLB First Team, 1x All-MLB Second Team, 4x Wins leader (’13,’14,’16,’18), 3x NL Strikeout leader (’16-’18), 2 No-Hitters (’15)
From: Texas | To: Cleveland | Contract: 1 year, $15m
Other Potential Options: Baltimore, Detroit, Washington, LA Dodgers
2024 Season Stats: 2-4, 3.95 ERA, 40 Ks, 1.15 WHIP
Career Stats: 457 GS, 216 Ws, 3.16 ERA, 3,407 Ks (11th All-Time), 1.08 WHIP

Similar to Verlander, Scherzer hits free agency heading into a season where he will be on the wrong side of 40. After returning from injury that kept him out the majority of the year, he had a solid few outings in 2024 and showed that he could pitch for a club in 2025. I don’t think Mad Max will call it a career yet either, and I think a few contenders can stash him as a 3rd or 4th starter even if he misses time with injury. The Orioles and reunions with the Nats and Dodgers are three intriguing situations. But the Guardians could be losing Shane Bieber and need veteran presence in their rotation. I like the idea of Cleveland bringing him in to potentially be a key piece to a playoff team.

Luis Severino
SP | Age: 31 | Career: NYY ’15-’23, NYM ’24
Achievements: 2x All-Star
From: NY Mets | To: Boston | Contract: 3 years, $66m
Other Potential Options: Detroit, Houston, NY Mets, CHI Cubs, Atlanta
2024 Season Stats: 11-7, 3.91 ERA, 161 Ks, 1.24 WHIP
Career Stats: 156 GS, 65 Ws, 3.81 ERA, 949 Ks, 1.20 WHIP — 9 seasons

Severino enters his second straight free agent market after being a cornerstone of the Mets’ rotation, casting away any doubt that he can be a competent starter. He’s going to have a very interesting market, as he turned down the $21m qualifying offer and will instead look to land a multi-year deal for similar AAV. I think he can find a 3-year deal in the $19m-$23m range rather easily, as any team that misses out on the top pitchers or are looking for a solid 2 or 3 in the rotation will be in on him. Of course, a Mets reunion could happen but I think they will be more in on the top guys and/or Manaea. The Tigers, Braves, and Cubs will all be looking for starters, but my guess is the Red Sox come away with him. He’s familiar with Fenway from all of his years with the Yankees, and Boston will be looking to land at least one of these top end starters. This is a fall back option if they miss out on Snell.

Walker Buehler
SP | Age: 30 | Career: LAD ’17-’24
Achievements: 2x WS Champion (’20,’24), 2x All-Star, 1x All-MLB First Team, Combined No-Hitter (’18)
From: LA Dodgers | To: Atlanta | Contract: 2 years, $60m (Player Option after Year 1)
Other Potential Options: St. Louis, San Diego, Washington, NY Yankees
2024 Season Stats: 1-6, 5.38 ERA, 64 Ks, 1.55 WHIP
Career Stats: 122 GS, 47 Ws, 3.27 ERA, 754 Ks, 1.09 WHIP — 7 seasons

Buehler was becoming one of the league’s best starters before Tommy John Surgery sidelined him. He returned and struggled mightily in 2024, but seemed to gain his momentum in the playoffs, leading the Dodgers to a World Series title as arguably their best arm. He’s likely only looking at a 1 or 2 year deal due to missing so much time over the past few seasons. The Dodgers don’t seem very interested in a reunion with all of their young rotation pieces and the ability to sign one of the other top guys available. The Yankees, Padres, and Braves are the best options in my mind that can afford to take him on a 1+1, high AAV type deal. The Braves could be losing both Max Fried and Charlie Morton, so Buehler could fit perfectly on a short term deal.

Shane Bieber
SP | Age: 30 | Career: CLE ’18-’24
Achievements: AL Cy Young (’20), 2x All-Star, 1x Gold Glove, 1x All-MLB First Team, Triple Crown (’20), 1x AL Wins leader (’20), 1x AL ERA leader (’20), 1x MLB Strikeout leader (’20)
From: Cleveland | To: St. Louis | Contract: 2 years, $30m (Year 1: $5m, Year 2: $25m)
Other Potential Options: Texas, Cleveland, Boston
2024 Season Stats: 2 GS, 2-0, 0.00 ERA, 20 Ks, 0.92 WHIP
Career Stats: 134 GS, 62 Ws, 3.22 ERA, 958 Ks, 1.12 WHIP — 7 seasons

Bieber was poised to be in the same class as Snell, Fried, and Burnes this free agency until Tommy John Surgery scrapped his season in April. Now he’ll be looking for a new home, while likely to miss the majority of 2025 with a late summer return possible. Again, this seems like the makings of a short term deal, and I can see someone gambling on a stash-then-pay type contract, guaranteeing a low amount in 2025 while he rehabs, then guaranteeing a high AAV for 2026 as he returns fully healthy. This will be the backup option to teams that can afford to stash him away. The Rangers and Cardinals, to me, seem like the best teams to take on that type of contract as they look to contend but shed some salary. Ultimately I give the Cards the edge with the idea of him and Sonny Gray being the aces in 2026.

Kenley Jansen
CP | Age: 37 | Career: LAD ’10-’21, ATL ’22, BOS ’23-’24
Achievements: WS Champion (’20), 2x NL Reliever of the Year (’16,’17), 4x All-Star, 1x All-MLB Second Team, 2x NL Saves leader (’17,’22)
From: Boston | To: Toronto | Contract: 1 year, $15m
Other Potential Options: NY Yankees, Philadelphia, CHI Cubs, Baltimore, LA Dodgers
2024 Season Stats: 27 SVs, 3.29 ERA, 62 Ks, 1.06 WHIP
Career Stats: 447 SVs (4th All-Time), 2.57 ERA, 1,221 Ks, 0.96 WHIP — 15 seasons

As arguably the best closer in the game over the past 15 years, Jansen hits free agency after an up-and-down tenure with Boston. He’ll undoubtedly still be able to land a closer role heading into his age-37 season, but it should likely be a high AAV 1-year deal. A return to the Dodgers is definitely in the cards, while teams like the Phillies, Yankees, Cubs, and Orioles will be looking for established relievers. But after non-tendering Jordan Romano, I like the odds of the Blue Jays to offer him the most money of this bunch. Toronto is going to be aggressive to compete in 2025, and having one of the games most dominant closers helps their odds.

Tanner Scott
CP | Age: 30 | Career: BAL ’17-’21, MIA ’22-’24, SD ’24
Achievements: 1x All-Star
From: San Diego | To: Texas | Contract: 4 years, $64m
Other Potential Options: NY Yankees, Philadelphia, CHI Cubs, LA Angels, Seattle
2024 Season Stats: 22 SVs, 1.75 ERA, 84 Ks, 1.13 WHIP
Career Stats: 55 SVs, 3.56 ERA, 486 Ks, 1.36 WHIP — 8 seasons

Scott is easily the best long-term closer option on the market, entering free agency for the first time after being the closer in Miami for the past three seasons. One of the several teams who are looking for a closer will offer him a big deal, as he should be able to find a 4 or 5 year deal. The Phillies, Cubs, and Angels are my favorites to bid the highest for him, but the Rangers could be a sneaky team to end up with the lefty. They’ll need to rebuild their bullpen with Yates, Robertson, and Leclerc all hitting free agency and they’re going to want a more long-term option than Jansen or Chapman.

Kirby Yates
CP | Age: 38 | Career: TB ’14-’15, NYY ’16, LAA ’17, SD ’17-’20, ATL ’22-’23, TEX ’24
Achievements: 2x All-Star, 1x All-MLB First Team, 1x All-MLB Second Team, 1x NL Saves leader (’19)
From: Texas | To: Philadelphia | Contract: 1 year, $12m
Other Potential Options: Texas, NY Mets, Toronto, NY Yankees, Boston, Arizona
2024 Season Stats: 33 SVs, 1.17 ERA, 85 Ks, 0.83 WHIP
Career Stats: 95 SVs, 3.17 ERA, 571 Ks, 1.11 WHIP — 10 seasons

Yates propelled himself back into the elite closer conversation in 2024 after several years fighting back from 2021 Tommy John Surgery. Before surgery, he was one of the game’s best closers in San Diego, and took two years of middle relief in Atlanta to bounce back. Now heading into his age-38 season, his arm has new life and should give teams hope that he can last another couple of high contributing years. Anyone with high leverage relief needs will be in on him, likely for a 1-year deal or a 1 + 1 option. The Phillies seem the likely choice to land him as their closer or a closer-by-committee.

Jeff Hoffman
RP | Age: 32 | Career: COL ’16-’20, CIN ’21-’22, PHI ’23-’24
Achievements: 1x All-Star
From: Philadelphia | To: Philadelphia | Contract: 3 years, $30m
Other Potential Options: Toronto, Washington, CHI Cubs, Boston
2024 Season Stats: 10 SVs, 2.17 ERA, 89 Ks, 0.96 WHIP
Career Stats: 256 GP, 4.82 ERA, 479 Ks, 1.42 WHIP — 9 seasons

Hoffman became one of the league’s best middle relievers in 2024, being named an all-star and stepping in as closer at the end of the season. He’ll hit free agency at only 32, and with very versatile ability to be seen as a closer, long reliever, or potentially be converted back to a starter. Teams like the Nationals and Cubs could look to sign him as a starter, while the Red Sox and Blue Jays would need top end bullpen help. Ultimately, I think he’ll return to the Phillies, potentially as their closer on a fresh 3-year deal.

Aroldis Chapman
RP | Age: 37 | Career: CIN ’10-’15, NYY ’16/’17-’22, CHC ’16, KC ’23, TEX ’23, PIT ’24
Achievements: 2x WS Champion (’16,’23), AL Reliever of the Year (’19), 7x All-Star, 1x All-MLB Second Team
From: Pittsburgh | To: Boston | Contract: 1 year, $11m
Other Potential Options: LA Angels, Arizona, Toronto, CHI Cubs
2024 Season Stats: 14 SVs, 3.79 ERA, 98 Ks, 1.35 WHIP
Career Stats: 335 SVs (16th All-Time), 2.63 ERA, 1,246 Ks, 1.11 WHIP — 15 seasons

Chapman proved he still has some solid value after a good year out of the Pirates’ bullpen, even stepping in as the closer towards the end of the year due to David Bednar’s struggles. He’ll likely land another 1-year deal, similar to what he had this year at around $7m-$12m. The Diamondbacks and Blue Jays could be interesting teams that will look at the former star lefty, due to their bullpen needs. It really could be anyone, but the Red Sox will be looking for bullpen help and if they can’t find a long-term deal, they may look to Aroldis to be a Jansen replacement.

Blake Treinen
RP | Age: 36 | Career: WSH ’14-’17, OAK ’17-’19, LAD ’20-’24
Achievements: 2x WS Champion (’20,’24), 1x All-Star
From: LA Dodgers | To: Arizona | Contract: 3 years, $39m
Other Potential Options: Philadelphia, Toronto, Atlanta, San Francisco
2024 Season Stats: 1 SV, 1.93 ERA, 56 Ks, 0.94 WHIP
Career Stats: 80 SVs, 2.78 ERA, 560 Ks, 1.20 WHIP — 10 seasons

Treinen is another aging reliever that saw a renaissance to his career after missing a season from surgery. He returned in May after missing all of 2023, and developed a new slider that was practically untouchable all season. This makes him a multi-year deal candidate for a team that needs a late inning veteran to fall back on. The Braves interest me as a team that can bring him in to be their 8th inning man, but Arizona will be losing Paul Sewald and will look for a new closer. A big deal from the Dodgers’ rival is where I think he’ll land.
